Before the parish unification, St. Mary’s had a thirty plus year tradition of hosting a parish block party. In September last year, the block party was the first major event for the combined parish, and the added presence of parishioners from St Nick's helped to make the party a great success. Similar to other neighborhood block parties throughout Evanston, Lake Street in front of St Mary church is blocked off between Oak and Maple Avenues. Over 30 tables are set up in the street and the long tables encourage multiple groups to sit together.
After the 5pm mass ends, there is music. This year, you will also have the opportunity to sing karaoke. The main food course is a choice of hot dog or hamburger (veggie option available) and additional Mexican food provided by parishioners. Desserts are provided by the St. John XXIII Black Catholic Discussion Group. A cash bar is available for beer and wine. The evening finishes with the drawing for the Pot O' Gold raffle. Tickets for the block party: $15 adult, $10 children under 12 (includes food) To purchase a ticket, click here. Raffle tickets: $100 each, will be available after all masses starting Aug 26.
