Following federal executive actions on immigration, the Office of the Attorney General issued information to help immigrants living in Illinois protect themselves and their loved ones from unconstitutional and discriminatory action. Every person who spends time or resides in Illinois, including undocumented persons, has constitutional rights regardless of their citizenship or immigration status. This information is designed to help you understand your rights and responsibilities when interacting with law enforcement.

Download, print out, and cut out both copies of the card. Fill out your attorney's name and phone number. Keep BOTH cards with you at all times. (If you show immigration officers or the police this card, they may take the card and not return it. This is why it is important to carry two copies of the card at all times.) On the front of the card is a statement that you are exercising your right to remain silent. On the back of the card, you will find a list of your rights. Read them often. Be prepared. To protect yourself, MEMORIZE the information on the card.

President-elect Donald Trump has threatened our communities by promising “mass deportations” of immigrants. One of the tools the Trump administration may use is an expansion of the “expedited removal” program, combined with raids in neighborhoods and workplaces. Using expedited removal, an immigration officer may quickly deport individuals without due process if the government establishes that they entered the United States without immigration documents and have been in the country for less than two years. People deported under expedited removal may be detained and deported without appearing before an immigration judge. Other immigrants – regardless of how long they have been in the United States – may also experience immigration enforcement and removal. Anyone without secure immigration status may be subject to enforcement efforts. People who were ordered deported in the past and people who have had contact with the criminal legal system are at particular risk.

Every family should have a Family Preparedness Plan. While it is our hope that you never have to use your plan, it is a good practice to have one in place to help reduce the stress of the unexpected. This packet will help everyone create a Family Preparedness Plan, regardless of immigration status. However, because of the additional challenges immigrant and mixed status families face, we also have additional advice for immigrants.

Pastoral MigratoriaImmigrants can be particularly vulnerable to denials of rights in the workplace, deportation, mental health issues, lack of health care or education, and other barriers to healthy, secure lives.
Pastoral Migratoria is an immigrant-to-immigrant ministry in which trained parish leaders help meet the needs of the immigrant community and give support through workshops and personal accompaniment.
