Café Justo Cooperative

Café Justo is a grower-owned Coffee Cooperative based in southern Chiapas, Mexico, formed to address poverty and the migration from Mexico to the United States. Café Justo coffee is organic and delicious! This is a Fair Trade Plus model because all roasting and processing (where much of the profit is) stays in Mexico and with the co-op members. This enables co-op members to stay on or return to their land. The co-op provides medical benefits and pension plans to its members. Co-op members are also able to fund education for their children and support for other community projects.

Saint John XXIII & Café Justo’s coffee partnership:
In 2018, a delegation from St. Nicholas Church journeyed on a Border immersion trip. Along with time in Arizona, their visits included two cities in Mexico. In one of those cities, Agua Prieta, the delegation met with members of the Café Justo co-op at their roasting facility and coffee shop. Impressed with the model, and the coffee, the delegation brought home the request by Café Justo for a coffee partnership with the St. Nicholas (St. John XXIII) community. As a result, St. Nicholas purchases its coffee from Café Justo and also provides this coffee to its parishioners and other members of the local community. In addition, members of the delegation later traveled to Chiapas where the coffee is grown and  harvested, and stayed with the growers in their homes, bonding with members of the co-op.

Café Justo’s Mission:
Café Justo’s mission is to deliver the highest quality, organic, environmentally conscious, fresh roasted coffee to its customers at a price that is fair and just. The coffee is shade grown and no chemicals are used. The co-op works to create a bond between the members of the co-op growing community in Salvador Urbina and the customers throughout the world.

If  100 families in one church purchase one or two pounds of coffee per month, an entire family in the co-op is substantially supported.

Orders are generally taken on a monthly basis, and picked up by the parishioners.

Visit the Café Justo website for more information on the coffee and co-op.
