Sacristans prepare all the elements needed to set up for liturgies in order the congregation is ready to worship. Sacristans have an overall goal: an environment that is hospitable, welcoming, clean.
The sacristan lights the candles, arranges the liturgical books, vessels, bread and wine and other materials that are necessary for the celebration of Mass. The sacristan checks to see that the other liturgical ministers are present including Lectors, Eucharistic ministers and altar servers. The sacristan recruits the cross bearer and other ministers if the assigned ministers are not present. After Mass, the sacristan sees that vessels are cleaned and put away. The sacristan needs to be at church 40 minutes prior to the start of Mass. For more information on becoming a Sacristan, please contact one of our coordinators.
